Belugadesign: A Unique Office Design Inspired by the Ocean

Creating a Dialogue with the Environment

Located in the twenty-year-old Ocean World building, Belugadesign's new office space aims to establish a strong position that engages with its unique surroundings. Inspired by the ocean theme park, designer Jing Li has created a striking orange metal sculpture as the iconic gateway to the office, surrounded by a blue facade that reflects the colors of the ocean. The design also takes advantage of natural light, with louvers allowing sunshine to filter through, creating a captivating and immersive experience for employees and visitors alike.

The new office space for Belugadesign, a renowned ocean theme park design firm, needed to accommodate a team of 62 people working collaboratively. To make the most of the vertical space and the existing structure of the building, the design incorporates metal nets as a pattern, reminiscent of the aquarium, to create a visually stunning installation. The reception area, reading room, meeting rooms, and other spaces are all part of the orange circulation, emphasizing the cohesive design concept. Even the lights, furniture, and presentation wall are carefully crafted to complement the key orange structure, creating a harmonious and immersive environment.

The realization of the design involved the use of materials such as metal, terrazzo, and oriented strand board. The dimensions of the office space are 13m in width, 28m in depth, and 5.5m in height, resulting in a total area of 330 square meters.

The design tags associated with this project include orange, installation, position, sunshine, and relationship, reflecting the key elements and concepts that inspired the design.

The design team, led by Jing Li, included Yiheng Feng, Peng Zhang, and Guangda Xu, who contributed their expertise and creativity to bring the project to life.

The strong orange installation not only defines the character of the space but also connects the circulation of the office. The vibrant orange color serves as a key feature to balance with the blue hues of the aquarium, creating a visually captivating and cohesive environment.

The project commenced in June 2017 in Dalian, China, and was completed in September 2017. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted to ensure a deep understanding of the site context and to establish a strong relationship between the interior and exterior of the building.

One of the main challenges faced during the project was the limited budget. However, the design team overcame this obstacle by utilizing affordable materials in a creative and innovative way, effectively defining the overall space while staying within the budget constraints.

The Belugadesign office space takes advantage of its geographical location, providing a unique opportunity to serve the Sunasia Ocean World in Dalian. The design embodies the spirit of passion for design, with the ocean serving as a constant source of inspiration. The orange metal screen, surrounded by the blue facade of the ocean park, acts as an iconic gateway, establishing a dialogue with the site and creating a memorable first impression.

This exceptional design has been recognized for its ingenuity and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate technical and creative excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making a positive impact on the world.
